Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Says Game’s Roster Will Not Be Replicated In Future Installments

Yeah, this is never happening again.

When Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced with the rallying cry of “Everyone’s Here!” it was pretty absurd. Not only is it quite a feat in and of itself to have the entirety of the Nintendo characters back from all the rosters, it also meant Nintendo went through the tangles of the various third party characters. Since its release, Ultimate has segued into being a celebration of classic game brands and companies, and it’s something that most likely will never happen again.

In his Japanese Famitsu column, Director Masahiro Sakurai commented on the evolution of the game, and the many worlds and IPs it now represents. It’s become a collaboration title that is “unprecedented,” and one he thinks that future installments in the series will be unable to replicate due to all the various issues involved (thanks to Twitter users PushDustIn and Noko for translations).

“By having every veteran fighter, and by having a number of collaborations with various games in Spirits mode and countless songs, Smash Ultimate is the ultimate collaboration title. This kind of game is definitely unprecedented.

“If Smash Bros. continues in the future, then there’s no way this many fighters and series can be represented again. There are still requests from all over the world for new fighters in Smash.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now exclusively for Nintendo Switch. For a breakdown of the latest fighter to join the roster, Banjo-Kazooie, take a look through here.
