Shenmue 3 Has Faster Pace Than Older Titles, But Still Slow By Modern Standards, Says Director

The game won't be the fastest thing ever.

When the original Shenmue released it was something entirely different from the kinds of experiences we’d seen at the time. Even today, there’s nothing quite like them, and probably for a lot of younger players (and some older ones too), they are very slow experiences. Like… very slow. The games are infamous for taking their time getting to their conclusion. The upcoming Shenmue 3 will be a faster experience, but don’t expect the pace of a modern game.

Speaking to GameSpot, Director Yu Suzuki said that the long awaited third game in the franchise will have a faster pace- but don’t expect something totally in line with modern gaming either. The game will be modernized, but still familiar to fans of the series.

“I’ve arranged a game to fit the time we’re living in now, so it’s a bit more modern, maybe,” said Suzuki. “You know, nowadays everything is going faster, these movies, the games. [Players are] looking for the thrill that it provides, and I think the Shenmue we have now is a bit faster as well compared to the old Shenmues. But since it’s still Shenmue it’s still quite slow and chilled compared to other games. It’s like, it’s just a slow life.”

Shenmue 3 will release for PlayStation 4 and PC on November 19th. And make you clear out some space, because it’s quite the big game. According to Yu Suzuki, if the game is successful, it will make an easier path to the fourth game down the line.
