Cyberpunk 2077’s Story “Works on a Much Grander Scale” Than “The Small Human Stories” of The Witcher

CD Projekt RED have proven themselves to be accomplished storytellers time and again over the years, and with the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077expectations are understandably high. And the recent words of story director Marcin Blacha will only kick them up that much higher. According to Blacha, players can expect the scope of the game’s narrative to far exceed what he describes as “the small human stories” of The Witcher.

Speaking in an interview with Inn:Poland (translated by VGC), Blacha said, “From a creator’s perspective, Cyberpunk 2077 is a story about heroes in opposition to the world, and that world itself is one of the heroes as well. For me everything is on a much grander scale than the stories of small human dramas presented in The Witcher.”

Even in a purely quantifiable sense, it seems CDPR have put a lot of work into writing Cyberpunk 2077. In the interview, Blacha revealed that the studio has written two entire thick book volumes just for the dialogue alone, on top of even more writing done for things such as directorial comments.

“How much text was created in total?” he said. “I haven’t done a detailed summary yet, I was just trying to figure out what order of magnitude I am dealing with when all the words written by the scriptwriter team are summed together.

“It turned out that we wrote two thick book volumes of dialogue, and another whole two volumes of directorial comments to go alongside them. The texts that will not be recorded will be the same, and the words in the documentation for the game cannot be counted, but there were plenty of them too.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is out on April 16, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. CDPR recently confirmed that the game had entered the final stages of pre-release development.
