Counterplay Games and Gearbox’s self-dubbed “looter-slasher” Godfall was one of the most exciting new announcements at The Game Awards, not only because it looks fantastic, but also because it was officially announced as a PlayStation 5 title- and an exclusive, no less. In fact, it’s the first game ever to have been officially announced as a PS5 title- so why exactly is it that the developers decided to make their game exclusively for the next gen console, rather than going cross-gen as so many devs usually do during such mid-gen transitional periods?

As per Counterplay Games CEO Keith Lee – who is also Godfall’s creative director – the advancements that Sony is making with the PS5’s hardware will provide benefits that the action title will really be able to use to its advantage. More specifically, Lee mentions the console’s solid state drive, its adaptive triggers, and its haptic-enabled controller.

“The exceptionally powerful SSD on the PlayStation 5 offers a new level of detail for each individual object as well as seamless loading of our expansiveness world,” Lee said in an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle. “Our combat is kinesthetic in nature, so the new controller’s ‘adaptive triggers’ and haptic feedback will make moment-to-moment combat feel exhilarating and visceral.”

By all accounts, the Xbox Series X (formerly known as Project Scarlett) also boasts those features, so Sony definitely put in some legwork behind the scenes to make sure that they secured Godfall as an exclusive PS5 title. Whether or not that pays off remains to be see, but at least based on the initial showing, the game looks promising.

Godfall will be a launch title for the PS5 when the console launches Holiday 2020.
