Sony’s spoken quite a bit about the PS5 and what changes its hardware will be bringing to the table. One of the things that they spoke about more recently was the console’s controllers, which – unlike previous DualShock controllers – will have no rumble, and will instead be haptic-enabled.

It’s an interesting addition, and one that even developers in the industry have expressed some excitement about, but questions still persist about just how much of an impact this will really have on the gameplay experience. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan, the impact will be notable, and Ryan expects the haptic controllers and the PS5’s improved graphical capabilities to bring about “a great evolution.”

“I actually tried it myself in a test version of Gran Turismo Sport,” said Ryan while speaking with Weekly Famitsu (via Twinfinite). “I was very surprised by the gameplay feel that was very different compared to the current DualShock 4.

“This is a very promising feature. Of course, with the improvement of the graphics over PS4, I think you will feel a great evolution as a gaming experience.”

Sony have confirmed that the PS5 will be out in Holiday 2020, and that the console will be revealed in full earlier in the year, so hopefully we’ll be hearing more about the haptic-enabled controllers not long from now. Stay tuned for any and all updates.
