I’ve said several times that I think Control is Remedy Entertainment’s best game to date. Not only is it already a fantastic title in its own right, it manages to take all the various themes and motifs the company has played with through the years and merge them into one bizarre package. One thing that makes it so unique is the world of Control with its many background stories and visuals. One such example is The Threshold Kids, a crude looking puppet show that reveals several aspect of the world. Now we get a peek at what inspired that show, and how it almost didn’t happen.

In an interview with Fanbyte, the Narrative Lead of the game, Anna Megill, said that the original inspiration for the video series was the YouTube videos that used a similar puppet style, specifically mentioning Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, a series of dark and surreal puppet shows.

She also revealed that the idea almost never made it to the final project with many people thinking the idea was too silly. Ultimately, she persisted and when a co-worker revealed they knew how to make puppets and came from a town known for the art, it all fell into place.

Megill also said she’d written several other shorts that didn’t make it into the final game. There is two story-based expansions coming this year, so maybe they will pop up there in some capacity. We’ll just have to wait and see.
