The beginning of 2020 has seen the NPD group releasing data for video game software and hardware sales in the US not just for 2019 (and for the month of December), but also for the entire decade. The best-selling games of the decade list was dominated by Call of Duty and Rockstar titles, and on the hardware front, Sony comes out on top (via GamesBeat).
While the Nintendo Switch is the United States’ best-selling platform for the month of December and for 2019 as a whole (in terms of dollar sales), for the entire decade, that honour goes to the PS4, which at last count had sold over 106 million units worldwide since it came out in 2013.
For 2019, with next-gen consoles right around the corner, it’s no surprise that revenue from hardware sales was down. In December 2019, hardware spending was down 17 per cent year-over-year to $973 million. Meanwhile, annual hardware spending was down 22 per cent, to $3.9 billion.
