Call of Duty Modern Warfare - Season 1

Along with revealing a significant increase for sales in Red Dead Redemption 2’s PC port, SuperData also reported some interesting digital figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In December, Infinity Ward’s shooter saw $78.7 million in digital spending. This is about as much as the previous year’s entry saw in its entire quarter ($92.9 million).

Revenue for Q4 2019 was also up by 4 percent compared to the previous quarter. The figure is significant because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare relied purely on cosmetic microtransactions and the Battle Pass, the latter which launched in December, for sales. Maps and other content were doled out for free (though drip-fed through the course of the season).

It’s good news because previous entries were inundated with Season Passes, microtransactions, Battle Pass tier skips, paid maps, etc. And while some of those have carried over, the current model’s success could improve the series’ image. Then again, it’s been almost two months – we’ll see how the rest of the year plays out, especially with rumors of Treyarch’s next Call of Duty: Black Ops.
