Animal Crossing: New Horizons ESRB Rating Mentions In-Game Purchases

It could be hinting at microtransactions, or perhaps future DLC.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ release is edging closer and closer, with the game now just a little over a month away from launch. With the clock ticking down, new information on the game continues to trickle in every day. This latest nugget of info comes from the game’s ESRB rating, as seen on its page on the official Nintendo website.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has, unsurprisingly, been handed an E (Everyone) rating, but interestingly enough, its brief description also mentions “in-game purchases.” This might possibly be suggesting that the game would have microtransactions – and it’s not impossible that it might indeed be the case for some cosmetics – but it’s just as likely that it’s hinting at future purchasable DLC for the game, which also falls under the “in-game purchases” description. Given Nintendo’s recent enthusiasm for wanting to support its games with post-launch content, it’s probably the latter.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out for the Switch on March 20, and pre-loading for the game is live now. Recently, it came to light that it would not allow save data transfers. After some backlash, Nintendo said that though the feature still wouldn’t be included, they would be adding a save data backup feature in the future– but only for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
