Dreams Is Not Currently Planned For PC, But Could “Migrate” To Relevant Platforms

No doors are opened or closed for the game just yet, according to the creative director.

Dreams is finally coming to the masses today (you can see the launch trailer through here), and it’s hard to gauge just how it will be received. While the potential is quite great for game creation, it will live and die on its community. The game, as of now, is exclusive to Sony’s PS4, but the concept seems like one that belongs on as many platforms as possible. That isn’t in the cards now, but could be depending on how successful Dreams ends up being.

Talking to VGC, creative director Mark Healey confirmed that as now Dreams isn’t being developed for any other platform, specifically singling out the PC. Healy expressed interest in the idea of Dreams on PC, before saying that the decision rests with Sony, and that it is “not something that’s happening right now”- though that might change based on “where the games industry goes in general.”

“I think that would be cool,” Healy said. “I mean obviously Sony have an opinion about that but yeah, I think, I don’t know where it’s going to go in the future, I mean it would be great to see that.

“That’s not something that’s happening right now, but I think a lot of that depends on where the games industry goes in general, I suppose.”

“I mean I think Sony have become more open recently to publishing stuff on the PC in general anyway, haven’t they?” he added. “Isn’t there some stuff that’s happening, I’m not sure?”

So there’s reason to be optimistic – to some extent – about a PC release for Dreams– and even more so for a PS5 version. Though he did not explicitly say that the game will launch on Sony’s next-gen console, he did say that Dreams could end up “migrating” to whatever platform is “relevant”. Seeing as Media Molecule have long-term plans for the game, that makes a lot of sense.

“Obviously at the moment we’re focused on PS4 and I would actually hope that it extends the life of the PS4 to be honest with you, then maybe when other companies start making games for it, the community will carry on making games for it, but if it’s as successful as we hope it is then it’s an obvious progression,” Healy said.

“You know, it’s a platform, so ideally in the future we’ll migrate to whatever is relevant,” Healey continued. “That’s probably about as much as I can say without getting smacked by someone.”

While he doesn’t say anything about the upcoming PS5, the implication seems obvious that he’s talking about some kind of version of the game for that system. Of course, we’ll have to see what kind of success Dreams will have first and foremost. Fingers crossed it manages a good run.
