E3 2020 Status Being Reassessed Due To Coronavirus Concerns

Recent events in LA put the show's future in the air.

After the cancellation of one of the year’s biggest video game related conferences (technically GDC 2020 was “postponed,” but due to the nature and logistics of the show, it will almost certainly not happen at this point), it was up in the air whether the gaming industry’s largest event, E3, would be affected by the ongoing coronavirus global outbreak. Yesterday, the governing body of the show, the ESA, pretty boldly said they were still on schedule. But what a difference a day can make.

The city of Los Angeles, which hosts the event, just declared a state of emergency due to recent cases of the coronavirus that have appeared in California. The ESA issued another statement saying they are now accessing the conference’s status and they will continue to monitor the situation.

“The health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, partners, and staff is our top priority,” the statement reads. “While the ESA continues to plan for a safe and successful E3 show June 9-11, 2020—we are monitoring and evaluating the situation daily.”

You can read the full statement through here.

Just to be clear, this is not a postponement, nor a cancellation yet. The show is still scheduled for June which, as of writing this, is still three months away, and there’s no telling how the coronavirus situation will develop in that time. Sadly, there’s not a lot of good news about the epidemic as of late, though, so we’ll make sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
