TeamKill Media’s upcoming “cosmic horror” shooter Quantum Error looks like an exciting prospect, not only because it’s a next-gen game or because it promises to leverage the PS5’s hardware to deliver stunning visuals, but also because of its very premise. But there’s still plenty we don’t know about the game yet- for instance, what sort of an approach is it taking to its gameplay structure, given its blend of horror and first person shooting?

Speaking to us in a recent interview, developers TeamKill Media’s Dakoda Jones and Micah Jones told us that they’re going for an approach that’s very similar to something like DOOM 3 or Dead Space, with puzzles peppered throughout the experience.

“Gameplay will be very similar to a game like DOOM 3 or Dead Space (but in first-person),” they told us. “It will be a slower paced FPS trickled with a variety of mechanics that revolve around the main character’s skills as a firefighter.

“We plan to have puzzles throughout where you may need to use a halligan bar to break open certain things or areas, rooms that if not vented will explode if the door is opened, moments where you have to manage oxygen levels etc.”

The developers also spoke to us about what sort of horror style they’re going for with Quantum Error, and what sort of a balance it strikes between action and horror. As per them, the game will prioritize atmosphere over jump scares or scripted horror sequences, calling its atmosphere “the embodiment of eerie.”

“With QE we are going for shooting mechanics first as that is the primary gameplay involved, however when it comes to building the horror aspect of the game it will be done in a way that promotes atmosphere over anything scripted,” they said. “No jump scares or anything cheap like that. The game’s entire atmosphere will be the embodiment of eerie.”

In the same interview, they also spoke to us about the length they are targeting for Quantum Error. Read more on that through here.

Quantum Error is currently in development for PS4 and PS5, though TeamKill Media haven’t ruled out a launch for the Xbox Series X down the line. They’ve also said they’re currently unsure if the game will be a launch title for the PS5.
