With the Xbox Series X launching later this year, Microsoft are preparing to redesign their entire infrastructure as they enter a new console generation, and it seems they’re ready to do that with the Xbox storefront as well. A new app called Mercury has been recently made available to Xbox Insiders, and though no details have come forth from Microsoft on what this is, a report suggests that it’s an overhaul for the Xbox store.

According to Windows Central, Mercury is the codename for an upcoming ground-up redesign for the digital storefront that’s currently in the works. Built on a new architecture for 4K TVs, Mercury is reportedly being primed for use not only on the Xbox Series X, but also the long-rumoured Xbox Lockhart – the allegedly cheaper and less powerful version of next-gen Xbox consoles – as well as the Xbox One.

Windows Central reports that so far it seems like, visually, the new redesign for the store will be similar to what’s available on the Xbox One right now, with most changes being made to the architecture under the hood, however, it’s possible that design changes and new features will be introduced in the future.

Though there has been no word on this from Microsoft themselves, it stands to reason that they’ll be updating their infrastructure to ensure seamless compatibility with the upcoming Xbox Series X, especially with their cross-gen focused approach to consoles going forward. Either way, stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated on any new info that comes our way.
