Sony unveiled their PS5 last month and alongside it a lot of different games. One of those was the next generation only next game in the classic horror series, Resident Evil Village. The game takes place after the events of Resident Evil 7 and looks to be expanding on that in a multitude of ways. Today, we got an idea of where the game is at in development as well as why they chose the rather odd naming scheme they did.

In the latest issue of Famitsu, it was revealed that the game was roughly at 60% development, meaning it is more or less over halfway done. The developers also say more details on Resident Evil Village will arrive in August. While initial rumors pointed to an early 2021 release, this seems to indicate it will probably be later than that now. While Resident Evil 7 and 2 both released in January of their respective years, Resident Evil 3 released in April.

As far as the name goes, the explanation given as to why they went with Village as opposed to Resident Evil 8 is they feel like the village you’ll be in, which they confirm to be somewhere in Europe, will be a sort of protagonist all of its own, which lines up with rumors that this game will focus more on exploration and make the setting more fleshed out. The report from Famitsu was transcribed and translated by Twitter user BlackKite, so big thanks to them below.

Resident Evil Village is set to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC at some point in 2021. The series also just officially passed the 100 million unit sold mark, which you can read about through here.
