The Medium

The next generation of consoles is almost upon us in less than half a year’s time. But, as is often the case, we still haven’t seen a lot of games exclusive to the PS5 and/or Xbox Series X just yet. Most of the biggest games that’s been highlighted have been crossgen, with only a handful of truly exclusive next gen titles, mostly first party. But one third party title that did catch a lot of people’s eye was The Medium. It’s a horror game from Bloober Team that’s a throwback to classic horror such as Silent Hill, and they want to use this new tech out of the gate to make some creepy stuff.

The developer has already said that The Medium would not work on current hardware the way they envision, and Producer Jacek Zięba spoke about the same with Xbox as part of their series highlighting games being optimized for Xbox Series X. In it he talked a lot about what he has before, but also added that they are aiming to use this new tech to help create a disturbing and dark atmosphere like we haven’t seen before, aided by the immersive potential of next generation technology.

“We’re putting a lot of effort into creating a heavy, disturbing atmosphere in the game. We’re using a variety of means to immerse the player into both our worlds, including music and environment, and thanks to no loading screens these methods are so much more effective. Before, it was a bit of an uphill battle to keep the game immersive and cinematic despite obvious breaks, and now the next generation simply makes that problem go away.

“We’re heavily using the CPU and GPU for the interactions between the real world and the spirit world. We have still much to reveal about The Medium, including one of our core gameplay features. The marketing team will kill me if I say too much too soon, but we’re using the extra power to really push what’s possible gameplay-wise on the next generation, and I simply can’t wait for players’ reactions.”

The Medium will launch this holiday season for Xbox Series X and PC.
