Microsoft’s showcase for first-party titles on the Xbox Series X is tomorrow and Sony is rumored to have another State of Play in August for the PS5. The next-gen hype is only going to increase in the coming months so it’s worth it to examine, once again, just how both consoles stack up to each other. GamingBolt recently had a chance to speak about the same with Matteo Marzorati, Game Director and Art Director at Coldens Interactive which is developing the platformer Vesper.

We asked about the PS5’s SSD, which makes use of a 5.5 GB/s read bandwidth (raw) and 8-9 GB/s read bandwidth (compressed), and how developers could take advantage of it. Furthermore, how does it perform next to the Xbox Series X with its 2.4 GB/s read bandwidth (raw) and 4.8 GB/s (compressed)? Marzorati said, “In the end it depends on the tools and how you can make use of the bandwidth.

“That also means it depends a lot on the teams. Both systems have a different architecture and a slightly different approach. But according to what we have experienced so far, they are quite on par so far. But the SSDs will definitely help when it comes to loading times. Not only during loading the game itself but from within the game. Which will enable teams who work with open worlds to create amazing experiences.”

Next up are the GPUs. The PS5 has 36 CUs clocked at 2.23 GHz (variable frequency) with a performance of 10.28 TFLOPS. In comparison, the Xbox Series X can provide 12 TFLOPS of performance with its GPU having 52 CUs clocked at 1.825 GHz. Will this difference have an impact on development?

Marzorati responded, “The numbers are amazing. And the additional power will for sure unlock new ways for how to create games, especially in the AAA sector. These are the type of games which will need every little additional performance boost. Luckily we’re among the small teams and don’t need that much TFLOPS, yet we won’t complain about them as it makes our live easier as well.”

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are both slated to release this holiday season. Stay tuned for our full interview with Marzorati soon.
