Sony has finally offered more details on PS4 backwards compatibility on the PS5, outlining the games that won’t be supported and various other interesting details. It first noted that the majority of the 4000+ PS4 titles would be backwards compatible with some benefiting from a Boost Mode. This will provide a “higher or smoother frame rate” on PS5.

Though many PS4 games would be playable, it noted that “some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles. In addition, some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles.” To that end, one is advised to see the performance of a PS4 title on the PS5 before purchasing any add-ons.

The PS4 titles that don’t support backwards compatible have also been revealed. They are:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner

For those who own PS4 game discs, they can be inserted into the PS5’s disc drive. After this, an update must be downloaded. Then the game can be selected from the Home screen and played, though you’ll need the disc inserted each time. Digital PS4 games can also be transferred to a PS5 console either through Wi-Fi data transfer or via a PS5 extended storage drive. Finally, you can head to your game library on PS5, download the supported PS4 title and play it once it’s ready.

While a DualShock 4 can be used to play PS4 titles on the PS5, you can’t access the Share menu. However, the Share button can still be used to bring up the new Create menu, take screenshots and record footage. Of course, you could also a DualSense controller for all of this as well.

The PS5 is slated to release on November 12th for North America, Japan and select other territories while Europe and the rest of the world gets it on November 19th. Stay tuned for more details as they arrive.
