PS5 Cross-gen Share Play

The first major system update for PlayStation 5 is going live tomorrow and offers a significant array of features. Those running low on storage can now transfer their PS5 titles to compatible external USB drives. While they can’t be played off the drive or directly downloaded to it, they will automatically update when transferred back. Sony is still working on support for M.2 solid state drives, though a release window still hasn’t been confirmed.

Among the new social features is the addition of cross-generation Share Play. This allows PS5 players to share their game screen with users on PS4 consoles. You can pass the controller virtually or even provide a second virtual control for co-op titles along with simply sharing your screen. There will also be a selection of joinable sessions for friends on both platforms with “Request to Join” functioning as a shortcut for game invites.

The Game Base menu will allow for easily switching between Parties and Friends (along with disabling notifications for any Party you’re in). In-game chat can also be disabled though you can also adjust the volume of individual players. Then there’s the option to pre-download updates for titles when the console is in rest mode. The “automatic updates” setting must be enabled for this. Searching for games in one’s library is now easier and you can also hide games.

Trophy settings will also allow players to customize the level of trophies that trigger screenshots and video clips (like only having it for Gold or Platinum Trophies). The Trophy Stats screen is also being revamped and will allow for viewing Trophy level and status at once. Stay tuned for more details when the update goes live tomorrow.
