After a long wait, Sony has confirmed that M.2 SSD expansion support – which allows for adding an external SSD for more storage – is coming to the PlayStation 5. It will go live in the next system software update for beta users and has a number of requirements. For instance, though it supports a capacity of 250 GB to 4 TB, the interface requires a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD.

A sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster along with a module width of 22mm is recommended. In terms of form factor, M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 are all supported. You’ll also need to ensure that the drive is sufficiently cooled. Some M.2 SSDs have built-in heat sinks but the user can also attach their own.

Sony also noted in a disclaimer that it “cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products.” After it’s been installed, players can download and launch both PS4 and PS5 games along with moving games between the internal storage and M.2 SSD.

How long it will take for the feature to exit the beta stage remains to be seen so stay tuned for more details. Meanwhile, Sony recently confirmed that the PS5 had sold over 10 million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling console in the company’s history.
