Halo Infinite Campaign Doesn’t Let You Replay Missions, But 343 Industries is Working on a Fix

"Being a more open game and a nonlinear game, it became incredibly challenging," associate creative director Paul Crocker explains.

For as long as Halo has been around, its single player campaigns have allowed players to replay missions through dedicated level select screens. Replaying missions on different difficulties, going looking for Skulls, and just messing about in that beloved combat sandbox has been a staple of the franchise, after all. Halo Infinite is launching soon, and critics have praised its single player campaign near-universally, but one thing it does lack is the ability to replay campaign missions.

Polygon revealed in a recently published article that though Halo Infinite allows players to freely explore its open world and tackle any remaining side content once the credits have rolled, it does not, unlike past Halo games, allow players to replay campaign missions until you start a new save (though your Skulls don’t reset even then).

Thankfully, 343 Industries has confirmed that that is something the studio is working on. Speaking with Stevivor, associate creative director Paul Crocker confirmed that being able to replay campaign missions is “part of what is coming later”, and explained that due to the game’s more open-ended nature, implementing that right from the get go proved to be complicated.

The main reason is because, being a more open game and a nonlinear game, it became incredibly challenging,” he explained. “It’s not that it doesn’t work, it’s just that it’s not finished.

We made the decision to make a better game, to improve the quality of the game so we could then add the features — just like co-op. And that is that is disappointing for us as the people who made it, but it was, also, the better option for us to make a better game and add that later.”

So when exactly can we expect level select to arrive for Halo Infinite? Crocker was unable to provide any specific window for that, but did re-iterate that it’s definitely in the works.

“[Level select] is all part of this stuff that’s being worked on the moment, and obviously we haven’t announced a date,” he said. “The reason I‘m being a bit cagey is I honestly don’t know exactly, but people are working that even now. It’s coming… is the only answer we can give.”

Meanwhile, campaign co-op won’t be arriving before May 2022, while Forge will be added in the summer at the earliest.

Halo Infinite’s single player campaign launches for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC imminently, on December 8. Check back later for our thoughts on the campaign- until then, check out our multiplayer impressions through here.
