Psychonauts 2

Double Fine Productions released what is probably their best game to date earlier this year in Psychonauts 2, which is not praise that’s lightly given, so understandably, there’s plenty of questions about what it is that the studio is going to turn to next. And while it will, of course, be a while before we get the answers to those questions, it seems like the folks at Double Fine are beginning to move on to their next games.

In an update published on crowdfunding website Fig, where Psychonauts 2 was initially funded, Double Fine revealed that its development has split into various teams that have started working on multiple new projects. Psychonauts 2 has wrapped up, for the most part, though there will still be some minor updates and tweaks made to the game going forward.

Psychonauts 2 has essentially wrapped up as a project although there will be tweaks and fixes as we move forward,” the developer wrote. “The studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll enjoy.”

So what can we expect from these new games that Double Fine has now started working on. As you might have expected, it’s still too soon to say, but the studio says it is going to keep on experimenting with new concepts and ideas the way it has always done.

“We like experimentation here at Double Fine,” the developer wrote. “Every game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual styles or gameplay, emotions, and more. Psychonauts 2 was a chance to revisit and reimagine the classic that launched our studio into the future. It was a long process but we like to think the pay off was pretty great. We stuck the landing.”

Given how good Psychonauts 2 was, we’re going to be eyeing Double Fine and whatever it is they come up with next with some excitement. Whenever it is that the developer chooses to reveal one of these new projects, it’s surely going to be worth keeping an eye on.
