Call of Duty has been in the headlines for many reasons of late, and it looks like there’s more of that to come. Activision recently published an update on the official Call of Duty website, in which the company provided a brief glimpse of what 2022 is going to look like for the series.

Having previously confirmed that this year’s Call of Duty game will be developed by Infinity Ward, Activision now confirms that, true to the leaks, it’s going to be a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare. Meanwhile, the company also confirms that “a new Warzone experience” is also in the works, which has also been in the leaks of late.

Both new games are being “designed together from the ground-up”, and both are being built on a new engine. Activision says the Warzone sequel will be “a massive evolution of battle royale”, with a completely new map as well as a new sandbox mode. Interestingly it’s been confirmed that while the original Warzone’s lead developer is Raven Software, Infinity Ward is leading development on its successor.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2 (or whatever they end up being called) will both launch later this year- leaks have suggested that the former will launch a little earlier than Call of Duty games usually do. Meanwhile, reports also claim that Warzone 2 will launch for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC only, skipping PS4 and Xbox One. Read more on that through here.

Until the next Warzone launches, Activision has also committed to making improvements to the current game to make it “more accessible and less frustrating”.
