Sony has announced that its acquisition of Destiny 2-maker Bungie has been officially completed. The company announced the event on the PlayStation Twitter account. Despite the acquisition, Sony hasn’t announced any plans to make Destiny 2 or future Bungie releases exclusive to PlayStation platforms.

Following the announcement of the completion of the acquisition, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst and Bungie CEO Pete Parsons took to Twitter to issue statements. The latter talked about the mission to “make Bungie the best place anyone in the entertainment industry will ever work” and turn it into “a center of creative and technical excellence.”

Back in May, Sony had originally expected the acquisition process to be completed by the end of the year.

Sony has made it clear since it started the acquisition process that Bungie will continue to operate autonomously. The company, in fact, is hoping Bungie’s expertise with live service game would help Sony’s own efforts to expand in the genre.

Sony’s acquisition of Bungie hasn’t gone without comment, however. Earlier this year, industry analyst Michael Pachter stated that the company may have overpaid to acquire Bungie.

Reports, however, have indicated that Microsoft was also in talks to acquire Bungie, but the deal ended up falling apart. It is also worth noting that of the $3.6 billion that Sony is paying to acquire Bungie, $1.2 billion is being used for collective incentive bonuses to retain Bungie’s employees after the acquisition.
