A new State of Play is available, but the focus is on one of Sony’s biggest upcoming PS5 exclusives – Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 16. Producer Naoki Yoshida spoke for over 25 minutes of new and familiar gameplay, walking through different elements of the action RPG.

The story follows Clive Rosfield through three different periods of his life, with his youth playable as a flashback and detailing events leading to the current situation. As Clive explores the world, he can bring up the World Map at any time and venture to available locations. Quests are indicated in each area, and you’ll find new friends and foes.

Combat-wise, some new skills are revealed, like a Thunder spell that works like the Shotlock system from the later Kingdom Hearts games. Some spells unleash streams of flames and a massive beam. Defeating enemies will earn Ability Points, which can unlock new abilities or upgrade existing ones. If you’re unsure what skills to use, the game can decide.

Timely Support Accessories are also showcased, which can be equipped for access to slow-motion dodging and Auto Evasion, making combat easier for the less skilled. Different party members join Clive on his journey and are controlled by the AI. You can only command Torgal – everyone else will adapt and respond to Clive’s actions of their own will.

In Cid’s Hideaway, the main base of sorts, you can purchase new weapons, armor and consumables like potions (as seen in previous raw gameplay). The Blacksmith can upgrade or craft gear, while the Arette Stone offers a training area and Arcade Mode to test your skills and compare scores with other players worldwide.

Speaking to different NPCs unlocks side quests and information on others in Valisthea. You can also pursue Elite Marks, powerful foes to slay. If you visit Harpocrates, you can look into and update the lore entries, known as The Thousand Tomes (with the animation resembling old-school sprites). An NPC named Vivian Ninetails will also provide details on the current state of the world and its characters.

The Eikon battles continue to look incredible. The battle with Bahamut as Phoenix carries elements of Panzer Dragoon with its lock-on mechanics, while that with Titan Lost has some platforming elements. Throughout the story, you’ll also face massive beasts like Dragons and Constructs (likely of the mysterious Fallen civilization).

There’s still more to be revealed, from battle and side content to the end game, so stay tuned. The main theme is also confirmed to be performed by artist Kenshi Yonezu.

Final Fantasy 16 is out on June 22nd for PS5.
