Final Fantasy Series Has Sold Over 180 Million Units Worldwide

Square Enix confirms that since the series' debut in 1987, all Final Fantasy games have collectively sold over 180 million units.

Final Fantasy has been Square Enix’s flagship franchise for as long as it’s been around, and it has, of course, enjoyed critical and commercial success to match over the course of the last three and a half decades. It has, in fact, recently crossed another major sales milestone.

In an annoucement for an upcoming live performance of Final Fantasy 16’s music at the Takarazuka Revue, Square Enix revealed that the Final Fantasy franchise has now collectivel sold over 180 million units worldwide since its debut in 1987 (via @Genki_JPN on Twitter). That number accounts for all mainline games and spinoffs across all platforms.

The most recent instalment in the beloved franchise was, of course, Final Fantasy 16, which launched last month to widespread acclaim, and commercial success to match, with over 3 million copies sold in less than a week. You can read our review of the game through here.

The next game mainline game in the series if Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second instalment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, which is due out sometime in early 2024. Meanwhile, leaks have claimed that Square Enix is also working on ground-up remakes of Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy 10.
