Gamescom Opening Night Live didn’t boast the highest number of new game announcements, but there were some surprises. Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor 3 is one of them, taking place in 2091 as Horzine creates Zeds to try and rule the world. Meanwhile, the rebel group Nightfall, which you join, has to stop them.

It’s still a co-op first-person shooter with support for up to six players, and microtransactions are confirmed. Speaking to PCGamesN, creative director Bryan Wynia discussed the monetization and how it would remain cosmetic-only. There will be a space in-game to show your cosmetics to teammates, though the team is figuring out its prototype.

Addressing paid skins, especially in a first-person title, he responded that it’s more about “providing the player opportunities to showboat, but in a positive way.” This means coordinating outfits in co-op, enjoying how they look or expressing one’s self in a way that “fits” with the game world.”

He said the team seeks to “learn from some of the things that players are enjoying right now”, avoiding any “pay-to-win scenarios.” Regarding post-launch support, he said, “When you look at how we’ve updated Killing Floor 2, there have been a lot of items like maps have been free. That’s something we want to continue to explore at this time.”

The shooter is still “early in development”, and its monetization plan is still being worked out. However, Wynia said the team wants to “do something that is classic Killing Floor and elevating what games as a service is” while having it “fit within our brand and in our franchise.”

Killing Floor 3 is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC, but there’s no release window.
