Larian Studios’ Next Big Game Will “Push Many Boundaries” Thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3’s Success

"I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries," says CEO Swen Vincke.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been one of 2023’s biggest success stories – far bigger than most would have expected it to be – and the RPG’s widespread success has, of course, gone hand-in-hand with a significant explosion of popularity for developer Larian Studios. Expectations will be high from whatever the developer’s next game is, and Larian itself certainly seems determined to keep pushing the envelope with whatever it works on.

That’s as per Swen Vincke, director of Baldur’s Gate 3 and CEO of Larian Studios, who recently took to social media platform X to touch on the acclaimed RPG receiving eight nominations at the upcoming The Game Awards – the most for any game, alongside Alan Wake 2 – including for the Game of the Year category. In his tweet, Vincke also briefly touched on the studio’s ambitions for the future, writing that though he can’t say much about Larian’s next big game, Baldur’s Gate 3’s success serves as encouragement for the studio to ensure that it keeps pushing “many boundaries”.

“This is a real honor, especially in a year with so many releases. Seeing our little ‘niche RPG’ make such waves is very motivating,” Vincke wrote. “I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries. I’m very excited about it.”

Given that Baldur’s Gate 3 only just launched a few months ago, it’s fair to assume that it’s going to be a while before we find out what Larian Studios’ next game is going to be. The developer has previously expressed in working on something smaller for its next project, and that Divinity: Original Sin 3 is something that we’re probably going to see at some point.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PC and PS5, and is also in development for Xbox Series X/S, with a release date likely to be announced this week.
