Blizzard Entertainment - Mike Ybarra

Following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft is reportedly reducing of 1,900 employees from its entire gaming division’s workforce. While he didn’t confirm being part of the same, Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Ybarra has revealed that he is also departing the company.

“To the Blizzard community: I also want to let you all know today is my last day at Blizzard,” he wrote on Twitter. “Leading Blizzard through an incredible time and being part of the team, shaping it for the future ahead, was an absolute honor.” Ybarra became co-leader of the company with Jen Oneal in August 2021 following the resignation and departure of J. Allen Brack when Activision Blizzard faced lawsuits over allegations of sexual abuse and discrimination.

Following Oneal’s departure, Ybarra became president of Blizzard in 2022, having spent over 20 years at Microsoft prior. “With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard behind us, it’s time for me to (once again) become Blizzard’s biggest fan from the outside.

“To the incredible teams at Blizzard – thank you. Words can’t express how I feel about all of you. You are amazing. Continue to do incredible things, and always keep Blizzard Blue and the player at the forefront of every decision. To all those impacted today – I am always available to you and understand how challenging today’s news is. My heart is with each one of you.”

The Verge reports that a new president of Blizzard Entertainment will be named next week. It also revealed that Allen Adham, chief design officer and co-founder, is departing. Matt Booty, Microsoft’s game content and studios president, stated, “As one of Blizzard’s co-founders, Allen has had a broad impact on all of Blizzard’s games. His influence will be felt for years to come, both directly and indirectly as Allen plans to continue mentoring young designers across the industry.”

Prior to this fresh round of layoffs, other high-profile executives who have left Activision Blizzard following the acquisition’s approval include CEO Bobby Kotick, chief communications officer Lulu Meservey, and vice chairman of Blizzard and King, Humam Sakhnini. Head here for more details.
