After announcing that NetheRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 nearly reached three million units sold last November, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed to Variety that it’s now reached that figure. The sequel launched in September 2023 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Zaslav also noted that it’s one of the four IPs that Warner Bros. values at $1 billion, the others being Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and DC. As a reboot of sorts, Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in the New Era with Fire God Liu Kang mentoring the likes of Raiden, Kung Lao and others to participate in the tournament. However, dark forces are at work, and it’s not long before conflict erupts again.

Check out our review of Mortal Kombat 1 here. Despite its success, the fighter has faced controversies, from its numerous bugs and terrible Switch port (which has since improved) to backlash against extensive monetization. It recently saw the addition of Khameleon as a Kameo Fighter and cross-platform play is on track for February. Co-creator Ed Boon also confirmed that story DLC is in the works.
