Avowed Won’t Support 60 FPS on Xbox Series X/S

"It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames," says Obsidian Entertainment's Matt Hansen, art director on Avowed.

From Redfall to Starfield to Forza Motorsport, a number of major first-party Xbox titles have attracted controversy over recent months due to their failure to support a 60 FPS frame rate on Xbox Series X/S, and it seems another game has been added to that list.

Speaking recently on the Iron Lords podcast, Avowed’s art director Matt Hansen revealed that the upcoming action RPG won’t support 60 FPS on consoles. As per Hansen, the game’s nature as a single-player, first-person title makes its 30 FPS target ideal for the game and for the development team.

“It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames,” Hansen said (transcription via VGC). “And that allows us to get a lot juicier with VFX and lighting and all this other stuff.

“It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with that. The game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal.”

Microsoft has often insisted that Xbox Series X/S are both capable of comfortable delivering 60 FPS gameplay (if not more), so the continued failure of even first-party titles not being able to hit that target at launch is sure to be a disappointment. Whether Avowed will add that option in a post-launch update own the line – as other first-party Microsoft titles have done – remains to be seen.

Avowed launches February 11, 2025 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Check out its more recent gameplay showing through here.
