Anticipation for Astro Bot was high in the lead-up to its release, and with reviews for the platformer going live, it seems like it is going to easily live up to expectations, and then some. In fact, Astro Bot is being received so well by critics that it has instantly emerged as the best reviewed game of the year so far.

At the time of writing, Astro Bot is sitting at an aggregate score of 94 on Metacritic, based on 105 reviews. That makes it the best reviewed new full game release of 2024 so far, ahead of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is sitting at a score of 92 after 151 reviews. Though Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s Metacritic score is 95, it is an expansion (albeit a staggeringly large-scale one), and not a full new game release like Astro Bot.

On OpenCritic, meanwhile, Astro Bot’s aggregate score at the time of writing is 95, based on 75 reviews, which puts it ahead of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (aggregate score of 93) on that site as well.

In our own review of Astro Bot, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “Astro Bot is a wonderful love letter to all things PlayStation, and an exceptional platformer in its own right. If you own a PS5, you need to play this game.” Read the full review through here.

Astro Bot launches on September 6 for PS5.
