Marvel Rivals - Cloak and Dagger

Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen has revealed in an interview with Metro that the studio has no plans to introduce role locks or role queues for the multiplayer shooter. Chen talks about the community’s desire for the feature in the game but mentions that, at its core, these desires come down to game balance.

Rather, the studio behind the game, NetEase, wants to give players more options in the form of new additions to the roster. Through a larger roster, the studio hopes to encourage unique team compositions among players rather than enforcing one through locking down roles.

“At its core, it’s really about the game balance,” said Chen when asked about the studio’s decision to forgo role lock or role queue despite the community’s desire for these features. “So, what we want to offer is more line-up or more team comp possibilities through our hero design and our team-up mechanic. So, we’ll be taking a little bit more of a Marvel-inspired approach.”

“It’s all about giving the players the freedom to experiment and find their unique strategies, as we’ve seen in many games and streams,” Chen expands. “Post-launch, people have been exploring an indefinite amount of team compositions, and we’re excited about what’s coming. We believe no role queue will lead to a richer gaming experience for everyone.”

Marvel Rivals surged to popularity after launching last month, crossing more than 20 million players, and the number seems to be headed even higher with the recent launch of its Season 1. It attracted more than 644,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, breaking the previous record.

NetEase Games seems to have big plans for Marvel Rivals moving forward as well, with Chen revealing plans in the same interview to bring two new characters to the game with every new season. This is in addition to new maps, cosmetics, and seasonal stories.

Marvel Rivals is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details, check out our review.
