Nintendo has announced that it will be attending Gamescom 2025. The announcement was made through the company’s German X account, where it said that it would be at the event which starts on August 20, all the way until its end on August 24. “Mark it in red on your calendar: Nintendo will be back at Gamescom in 2025,” wrote the company (translation via X). “We look forward to welcoming you from August 20 to August 24 in Cologne!”

It is worth noting that the company had decided to skip the event last year. “Gamescom is a key event in Nintendo’s calendar,” said a Nintendo of Europe spokesperson. “However, after careful consideration, we have decided not to participate in Cologne this year. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch at other events throughout Germany.”

The company’s decision to attend the gaming event this year likely stems from the fact that it has a new console hitting the market soon. During Gamescom, we might end up seeing Nintendo not only unveil some new things for the Switch 2, but also have some of its upcoming titles to play for those that attend the event in-person.

Interestingly, Nintendo had taken the chance to showcase tech demos for the Switch 2 during Gamescom 2023. The showcases took place behind closed door, and included The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running on the upcoming console at 4K/60 FPS. Epic’s The Matrix Awakens demo was also showcased running on the console, which at the time was likely still in its early stages.

Nintendo is currently getting ready for the launch of the Switch 2 on June 5. The company has a host of titles that will be available for the console on launch, including Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. The console’s launch is being considered quite a bit deal, with one analysis company – DFC Intelligence – going as far as calling it the most important console launch ever.

This comes down to several factors, including the fact that GTA 6’s delay from its original Fall 2025 release window to May 26, 2026 means that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will continue to suffer declines in console hardware sales. The firm also believes that Nintendo’s forecasts for first-year Switch 2 sales – 15 million – is incredibly conservative.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, for his part, has said that the sales forecasts are conservative because the company understands that the higher price of the Switch 2 will serve as an obstacle to its widespread adoption. “Since the Switch 2 is priced higher than the original Switch, we recognize that there will be considerable hurdles in achieving the console’s widespread adoption in the early stages,” he said.

Furukawa also noted that the conservative projections weren’t based on the idea that there would be trouble in producing enough consoles. “This sales projection was not determined based on limitations in our production capacity,” he explained. “The situation with US tariffs and concerns about economic downturn have also not affected our forecast. In order to achieve the target of 15 million, we will need to manufacture even more units than that.”
