As Bungie gets closer to its March 2026 release window for PvPvE extraction shooter Marathon on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the studio has continued its strictly NDA-enforced playtests. A recent one of these playtests, having taken place back in December, has resulted in one of its players leaking some new details. As spotted by TheGamePost, these details include screenshots of skins for the six playable Runners.

According to the report, around 55 skins have been revealed through the leak, which have seemingly been split relatively evenly between the Runners. As per the leak, Triage, Destroyer and Recon have 8 skins each, Assassin and Thief have 10 skins each, and Vandal has the most skins, coming in at 11. It is worth noting that these details only apply to the playtests, and these numbers might end up changing quite a bit when the game finally comes out.

As for how these skins can be unlocked by players, they will likely end up being a combination of achievement and progression-based unlocks and an in-game store where they can be bought with real money, and even a potential battle pass. Some of the screenshots, however, indicated that Vandal, Destroyer, Assassin and Thief will also be getting skins through buying the Deluxe Edition of Marathon.

Bungie had announced the March 2026 release window for Marathon just last month, and confirmed that it will be priced at $39.99. The studio also announced that, at launch, the extraction shooter will feature four maps: Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Outpost and the UESC Marathon‘s Cryo Archive. The last one of these, however, will only be available once the game properly kicks off its first season shortly after launch.

The studio also confirmed that Marathon will feature Reward Passes that don’t expire. This will give players the opportunity to unlock cosmetics and other rewards even if the game itself moves on to its next season. Announcing this, the studio said the gameplay will “never come down to how much money you spend.”

Meanwhile, the game’s art director Joseph Cross had also announced that he is leaving Bungie. Taking to social media, Cross said, “I’m incredibly proud of the visual world we built for Marathon. Getting support at this scale for something a bit different is rare, and the art team at Bungie is the best in the biz. I’ll be enjoying playing the game as a fan with all of you. Massive thank you to everyone who has supported through all of it.”

In another interview, Cross had confirmed that the decision to leave Bungie was his own, noting that he was proud of the work he had done on Marathon and Destiny 2 during his tenure at the studio.

The development of Marathon has seen quite a bit of controversy, some of which would force Bungie to abandon its plans of releasing the game last year and focus on more playtests. Among these controversies were also allegations of the studio having plagiarised the art of artist Antireal. The artist announced in early December that the issue between her and the studio has “been resolved”.
