Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - Remake

While Saber Interactive has continued to maintain silence on the status of its remake of seminal RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a new report indicates that the title is going quite well. According to well-regarded leaker 100% Star Wars, the studio has been working on growing its team.

“They have been hiring some extremely high-end talent from across the industry, and Saber is very much a unified front when it comes to the development of this game, with resources and talent being pulled from all over the company,” said the leaker in a recent video. However, while the team is still seemingly aiming for a 2028 launch, it’s still not guaranteed to make it by then.

100% Star Wars has also spoken about being aware of reveal plans for the remake being slated for later this year. However, depending on how well development continues to go, these reveal plans could be pushed further back to 2027, and potentially be lined up with the annual Star Wars Celebration event that takes place in early April. For the time being, however, they have speculated that a reveal is possible during this year’s The Game Awards.

The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was originally being developed by Aspyr. However, development wasn’t quite going well at the time, and the project has since been handed over to Mad Head Games, which is working on it under Saber Interactive. The company’s chief creative officer, Tim Willits, confirmed that development on the RPG was continuing. However, he still didn’t have any details to reveal.

While we don’t quite have much in the way of details regarding the current iteration of the remake, the earlier version developed by Aspyr has seen some of the assets from early in its development period being leaked online. These assets include scenes with Captain Carth Onasi and Trask Ulgo, and even have some placeholder voice acting.

When Saber took over the project, CEO Matthew Karch said that the remake was “alive and well”, and that the team wants to “exceed consumer expectations”.

“It’s clear, and it’s obvious, that we’re working on this,” he said. “It’s been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was originally released in 2003 on PC and Xbox. Developed by BioWare during what many consider to be the studio’s golden era, the RPG became beloved thanks in large part to its strong character writing and memorable storyline that had players visit a host of different planets where they could interact with various characters and experience their stories and culture.

The original release made use of a modified version of the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset of the time. It is currently unknown whether Saber Interactive’s remake will use a similar system or if it will swing in either direction along the tactical to real-time action combat spectrum.
