While the long-awaited addition of the Highwind, the infamous WEAPONs and exploring areas like Wutai are worth looking forward to, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is adding something not seen in the original: Jobs. Well, Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear or FITS, to be more precise. These enable different classes, such as Warrior for Cloud and Black Mage for Tifa.
It’s a gameplay system that’s defined multiple Final Fantasy titles over the years, but don’t expect Revelation to offer as much choice. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told GamesRadar (via translator) at the recent Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest Berlin that each character will have only four.
“It did make me realize all over again how hard it is to develop games these days. When you look at some of the early Final Fantasy games that have job systems, you could put a lot in there.” Unless it’s a title like Final Fantasy 14, which can add new Jobs “bit by bit” over time, anything more is “just insanely difficult.” Given the production values and how they would interact with each other, it’s understandable.
Nevertheless, the current roster of FITS is pretty significant, and “each of those is quite a defined role.” “In the end, that has added quite a lot of breadth of strategy for players to engage with, so I think it has resulted in a really good addition to the battle system. Even though we only have four FITS, we have a lot of characters, so it was quite a lot of work.”
With the addition of Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind, there are nine playable characters in the finale, meaning a total of 36 FITS. Whether each character has unique options or some repeats remains to be seen over the coming months, so stay tuned.
Out in Spring 2027, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is shaping up to be a monstrous conclusion to the Remake trilogy. And despite supposed evidence of a Story Expansion Pass, Hamaguchi assured in another interview that the current tale would conclude with the third part. If DLC happens, then the team will instead focus on untold stories for other characters.
