Ritual Tides Mixes Amnesia With Survival Horror Shooting and Occult Creatures

An island with bizarre, hostile creatures and not enough bullets for them all is a familiar premise, but Vertpaint makes it work.

Ritual Tides

With the various horror games out there, especially upcoming efforts like Silent Hill: Townfall, it’s always interesting to see titles like Ritual Tides with their own signature brand of weirdness. The premise sounds familiar – washed up on an island with no memories, and becoming embroiled in things clearly outside of your pay grade. Still, there’s a genuine creepiness hard to deny, especially in the latest trailer.

After meeting Malcolm, you’re told that the locals worship Mother Hortus, and if that wasn’t strange enough, there are “creatures” roaming about. The island’s remote location cuts off any escape, but you still need to try, even as Hortus’s cult – and whatever that thing is that’s consuming bodies whole – attempts to stop you.

Developed by Vertpaint, which is comprised of “industry veterans,” Ritual Tides leans into more realistic gameplay rather than having you LARP as Leon S. Kennedy. Besides making ammo scarce, you also need to use each hand to climb and carefully balance when walking on planks. As the team notes on Steam, “a gun is not always reliable,” so it’s best to choose your moments.

Visually, Ritual Tides – which is coming to PC and consoles but doesn’t have a release date – looks solid, courtesy of photogrammetry scans done by the team. We’ll be keeping a close eye on its development, so stay tuned for more updates.
