With several recent rumors indicating that work on a new Injustice game has gone far enough for playtesting to begin, NetherRealm Studios’ development chief Ed Boon has taken to social media to dispel these rumors. Responding to a post claiming that a “AAAA” fighting game was in development involving NetherRealm and Insomniac Games, Boon said that it was “100% false” and asked for the “next rumor please”.
In further posts, Boon also said that rumors surrounding playtesting for Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, and Mortal Kombat 9 were “all false”. In an interesting twist, when a fan asked if a new Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe game was being playtested, Boon said that a game not being playtested doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not in development.
“Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm. But just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development.”
This comment indicates that, while Injustice 3 may not be undergoing active playtesting with an external partner right now, it might still be under development. Boon taking to social media to address the rumor mill might also be a form of misdirection, with NetherRealm Studios getting ready to unveil something closer to the end of the year.
Reports indicating that Injustice 3 was undergoing playtesting came about thanks to a listing being discovered on external playtesting firm Good Gamer Group for a “AAA fighting game” that would feature 2D gameplay. Through a process of elimination, a new title by NetherRealm Studios seemed like the most likely candidate. The fact that playtesters were required to be present in Culver City, California, also added to this, since NetherRealm’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, has headquarters there.
Other reports have indicated that the roster for the new Injustice project will include Supergirl and Batwoman. The former shouldn’t really come as any surprise to fans of the series, since she was also a member of the roster and an important character in the story in 2017’s Injustice 2. Batwoman, on the other hand, would be a new addition to the franchise, with her only appearance being in tie-in comics.
Rumors have also indicated that the superhero fighting game being developed by NetherRealm Studios might move away from the Injustice name altogether. Aside from the potential for a new entry in the Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe series, the studio might also be looking at more recent comic stories to adapt into a video game.
One potential candidate for this would be DC Comics’ most recent crossover event – DC K.O. – which pits many characters from across the DC universe into a massive tournament against each other in a bid to defeat Darkseid once and for all. In a twist, the comic series, which took place from October 2025 to March 2026, also featured several guest characters, including Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero. DC K.O. also featured many tie-in comics that told smaller stories about what other characters throughout DC were doing while the tournament was going on.
