If the report about Gears of War: E-Day selling 230,000 copies earlier this month left you concerned, there’s slightly good news. A source speaking to The Verge’s Tom Warren claims it has sold more than 400,000 copies on Xbox and Steam.
However, after reports that it cost $500 million to develop (not including marketing costs), you have to wonder whether Xbox is satisfied with these returns. Gears of War: E-Day marks the division’s return to Xbox console exclusives, albeit on a case-by-case basis, and it happened somewhat infamously, with rumors claiming that it shelved the PS5 version shortly before its June showcase.
This baffled many, especially after Xbox Game Studios titles like Forza Horizon 5 excelled on PlayStation, not to mention other upcoming multiplatform releases like Forza Horizon 6 (out this January on PS5) and Fable. With Clockwork Revolution touted as the next exclusive, will E-Day’s alleged sales cause Xbox to pivot, especially after it claimed that it wouldn’t? Time will tell, but this certainly isn’t the best look, and it may influence whether The Elder Scrolls 6, rumored to be revealed as Sentinel next month, is exclusive.
Especially when Gears of War: E-Day is, by all accounts, a great game. Check out our campaign and multiplayer impressions, or head on over to Metacritic, where it currently has an 87 Metascore based on 70 reviews.
