Everyone expected The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Nintendo Switch 2 remake to be reviewed favorably ahead of launch. But few probably expected it to become the highest-rated title of 2026. It currently has a 96 Metascore based on 80 reviews, just three points shy of the original and its 99 Metascore that continues to tower over gaming history.
IGN scored it a 9, calling it “an exceptional remake of an incredible game and a rich adventure that stands on its own.” GameSpot also gave it a 9, praising the upgraded visuals, voice acting, and new jump button while criticizing certain elements like Gerudo Fortress.
Other publications offer similar praise, and it’s telling that the remake’s lowest score is currently an 8. In fact, only six reviews at present are lower than a 9, and there isn’t a single “Mixed” or “Negative” review to be found.
This is somewhat expected since this is a remake of one of the greatest games ever made, but it’s still surprising. You have to wonder how sales will shake out when it launches on November 5th for Nintendo Switch 2. Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime, head here for everything you should know before buying. And before you ask, yes, the development team took another stab at the infamous Water Temple and made some improvements. Head here for more details.
