Grand Theft Auto 6 potentially having strong pre-order performance shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, since the title is shaping up to be one of the biggest launches in video game history. According to new data by analytics firm Sensor Tower, Grand Theft Auto 6 has seemingly already generated $751 million in pre-orders alone.
The firm’s sales tracker indicates that this massive amount of revenue has been the result of around 7.71 million copies of the game having been sold ahead of its November 19th release. The tracker also offers some details about the split in sales across PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Sony’s console has taken a massive lead, with 74 percent of the pre-orders coming from PlayStation users. Xbox Series X/S has garnered around 26 percent of the pre-orders.
While the PS5 has a major leg up over Xbox Series X/S in terms of Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders, Xbox’s chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, had said back in September that the company has been “very happy” with the results so far. He also noted that pre-orders on Xbox were in line with the company’s current position in the console market.
“Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders,” he said in response to The Verge’s Tom Warren discussing pre-order figures being skewed heavily towards the PS5. “The title is breaking records for Xbox; we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.”
Along with there simply being more PS5 users than Xbox Series X/S in the world, the fact that Sony had signed a marketing deal with Rockstar Games has also likely played a major role in giving PlayStation a leg up when it came to pre-orders. Even the Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look showcase from August had a prominent logo at the end revealing that the gameplay footage was recorded off a base PS5.
Rockstar recently announced that pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto 6 will begin on November 10th. Along with this, the company also confirmed that players will need 212 GB of storage space in order to download the game.
The studio has also announced that more details about Grand Theft Auto 6 will be revealed as we get closer to its release. While the nature of these details remains unknown, speculation indicates that we might see more gameplay, and perhaps even information about how it performs on the PS5 Pro.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be an incredibly ambitious game, with head of development Aaron Garbutt recently revealing that players can even “have your life in the game” thanks to the number of activities and gameplay systems it offers. “You can really make the game what you want it to be at the time, whether that’s more of a roleplay experience where you’re buying cigarettes and beer in the shop and going on the train for the day, or going to a club.”
