Miyamoto: Vita is a “hi-spec machine”, but needs more games to succeed

Shigeru Miyamoto, the legend of Nintendo, had some interesting things to say about Sony’s new handheld, PS Vita. He dropped some knowledge bombs by saying that the Vita needs more games to succeed.

Translation: Games sell hardware. Who would have thought? I’m pretty sure some people at Sony don’t know this simple fact.

He praised the Vita in an interview with Edge and called it an “hi-spec machine [that] you can do lots of things with”. Vita’s not doing too well in Japan, according to the weekly Media Create Charts, but the 3DS was in the same position last year, when there weren’t many games to boost the sales.

After the price drop -and a quite significant one at that- the sales haven’t been the same i.e., they have been incredible. Unless Sony does the same for the Vita, it looks unlikely that Sony’s handheld will bounce back in Japan unless a bunch of incredible software is released for the system.

Miyamoto explained the difficulties they faced with the 3DS’ launch and how they turned around the sales.

“When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn’t have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn’t have Mario Kart 7, we didn’t have Kid Icarus: Uprising,” he said.

“We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren’t able to deliver them at that time.

“We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realise the key software was missing when we launched the hardware.”
