It’s always a shame when a game doesn’t do well on one particular platform while players on other systems get to enjoy everything it does well. The irony of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve failing to stick the landing on PC isn’t lost on us, but it looks like there’s a ray of hope already shining on the horizon.
It’s currently at 72 percent “Mostly Positive”, thanks to issues around crashes and poor flight-stick controller integration. There’s also a bit of a fuss around Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War not having its own standalone app on the platform, forcing players who want to play it to download the new game in its entirety.
The studio has announced it is aware of crash reports on Steam and is looking into potential solutions to get you up in the sky and keep you there long enough for its excellent gameplay and cinematic presentation to win you over. That’s certainly been the case during our time with the PS5 version of the game, where its examinations of the effects of armed conflicts in the story don’t get in the way of some phenomenal action once you’re in the cockpit. It’s a balance that even the best games don’t get right sometimes, but that’s definitely not the case here.
It also recommends you try updating your graphics drivers and ensure you’ve got enough storage and virtual memory active on Windows as preventive measures. As for those other issues, there’s nothing in the latest announcement that addresses them at the moment.
If you’re waiting it out until the team behind it gives you a green light to fly on the PC, we’d recommend using that time to catch up on the live-action prelude to the game called HOUR ZERO. It’s pretty good on its own, and even better once you begin to see how well it leads into the story the game is trying to tell.
