Anthem Was In Development Before Destiny Launched, BioWare Reveals

But BioWare does acknowledge that games these days are influenced by other games on the market.

Bungie really kickstarted something with Destiny back in 2014. Though the title was controversial from the go, its shared world shooter mechanics clearly inspired others to follow in Bungie’s footsteps. Since 2014, we have seen Ubisoft Massive and The Division, and now BioWare with Anthem attempt to replicate that formula.

However, according to BioWare, Anthem was actually in development before Destiny ever even came out. Although Michael Gamble of BioWare, speaking to the French outlet Jeux Video in a video interview that you can see for yourself below, does admit that games end up being influenced by one another.

“It’s interesting because Anthem has been in development since before Destiny even came out… [but] games these days are influenced by the games out in the market to a certain degree,” he added.

To be fair, Destiny itself has had a lot of problems that BioWare probably wants to avoid repeating, so we can assume that they will be doing a lot of things differently on their end as a result. Whether or not the end result is worth it remains to be seen (although the latest footage for the game certainly looks great).
