Release Date: September 12th, 2013
ARMA 3 is an upcoming military simulation game for the PC.
It is being developed by Bohemia Interactive and will be released on Steam and other digital distribution platforms.
The game features a lot of new upgrades and gameplay mechanics and can be termed as a worthy successor to the previous game.
The alpha version was released recently and it gives a chance to players to try out the game that is in development and when the full version unlocks they can start playing it.
There was also a lite version which allows alpha version owners to invite new players and give them access to the game for a temporary time.
The game is a true simulator and features a massive land mass. It will be released in 2013. It also runs on the virtual reality 4 engine.
It is said to feature realistic graphics and audio.
Development
The game runs on a modified virtual reality 4 engine which makes large scale possible to render along with offering a good visual fidelity. The previous versions of the engine were used in the Arma series and there are new upgrades to the one Arma 3 runs on.
The environments and buildings are destructible and the the islands will feature over 50 villages and most buildings can be entered. [reference]
The game has support for DirectX 10 and 11, supports ragdoll physics, features weapon and uniform customisation along with gameplay features like scuba diving and underwater environments. Engine also supports Nvidia Physx.
Animations are a big part of the improvements planned for Arma 3. Their development touches upon various aspects of the core gameplay, be it weapon handling, manoeuvring around obstacles or even whole new avenues of gameplay, such as scuba-diving. [reference]
Bohemia Interactive now utilises three optical motion capture systems, including high-end Raptor-4 cameras from Motion Analysis Corp.
Story
The game is set in the mid-2030s where NATO forces face off against the Iranian military. The game was also banned by the Iranian government for these themes. You play as a British Special Forces soldier called Captain Scott Miller.
There are a lot of missions planned where you will be able to infiltrate or obliterate massive areas. There’s also a lot of weapons and vehicles available at your disposal and they are realistically modded. There aren’t a lot of details on the campaign yet but scuba diving and night vision gameplay might be possible.
It takes place on the Aegean islands of Altis which is said to be the largest official terrain in the Arma series with 270km2 land mass.
Gameplay
Like the ARMA Games that have come before it, Arma 3 focuses on a realistic portrayal of combat operations with players taking a number of approaches to combat, be it by way of land, sea and air vehicles.
The game is primarily played from a 1st person perspective and players are encouraged to act in a realistic manner, simply running and gunning will guarantee quick death. To help simulate the realism of a war zone, players can be put under suppressing fire and injuries impact performance.
Controversy
Two ArmA 3 developers were jailed in Greece for allegedly spying on their military bases, and while the developers have denied doing any such thing, their bail was earlier rejected and were in prison waiting for something good to happen.
The developers were released later on bail and came home safely. They had described their tale in detail. [reference]
“We went just to a holiday on which we planned to enjoy the beauty of the island which has been our source of inspiration for more than two years, taste some Greek food and wine (which both was really good) and swim a bit (beaches and sea were awesome). What followed now resembles a bad movie.”
“After the check of documents, we were brought to police station where the officers started to be interested in our cameras and notebooks,” Buchta continued. “Several men in civilian clothes appeared, going through all our photos and talking about the possible danger we pose to the Greek national security. We did our best to explain ourselves and cooperate on clearing the misunderstanding.
The case has still not been closed but the court will set a date for the trail and the duo are confident that they will be freed.
