Despite the overall size of the Caribbean Sea remaining the same in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, fans can expect to discover more across both land and sea. In a recent Reddit AMA, creative director Paul Fu confirmed that the map is still 16 x 16 km, but it’s “now a little more dense, with new islands and new locations nestled in the cities!”
Naturally, he didn’t offer any spoilers on the new areas, though it wouldn’t be surprising if a few tied into the new quests. Resynced introduces three new officers that Edward can recruit for the Jackdaw, bringing on powerful naval combat abilities, but you first need to earn their trust by completing their questlines.
Of course, there’s also new content for existing characters like Edward “Blackbeard” Thatch and Stede Bonnet. You can check out a cinematic for the latter here.
While new locations are on the agenda, so are new ways to explore, particularly the compass. If you’ll notice, it replaces the standard minimap, marking points of interest for you to navigate to. Regarding this, game director Richard Knight said, “Our focus with Resynced was to keep our eyes on the seas. The compass helps give a direction on where to go, without taking up a lot of screen space or distracting from the sea.”
And though controls are remappable, the development team acknowledged requests to implement the original’s scheme. Whether it will be ready in time for launch is still unknown. There’s also the question of the Hidden Blade no longer being selectable as a weapon, much to the chagrin of fans.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and has already reached one million wishlists.
