Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s World Is “A Bit Larger Than Odyssey”

"It's not a small game," says producer Julien Laferrière.

Assassin’s Creed games have kept on getting progressively bigger with each new entry, to the extent that many considered Odyssey’s massive world map too big for its own good. Recently, Ubisoft’s head of communications for the Middle East Malek Teffaha said that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla would be taking that criticism into account and be a little smaller, but it seems the developers are now backtracking on those comments.

Not only has Teffaha’s aforementioned tweet been deleted, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla producer Julien Laferrière has also said that the game’s map is actually going to be a bit bigger than Odyssey’s Ancient Greece. Speaking in a video interview with French journalist Julien Chièze (translation via Reddit), Laferrière said that with all of England and a good chunk of Norway being part of the gam’s map – in addition to secret locations that haven’t yet been revealed – Valhalla’s world is going to end up being slightly bigger than what we saw in Odyssey.

“I would actually say in terms of range it is probably a bit larger than Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” said Laferrière. “I do not have the exact figures at this stage, but we have not only created the whole country, which is in this case England, but also to a good part of Norway too. There are other secret worlds, which I can not speak about today, which contributed to the size of the game. It’s not a small game, it is a game which is clearly ambitious, which will offer many many hours of gameplay for the players.”

It’s worth noting that large sections of Odyssey’s map were covered in water, which did contribute quite a bit to its large size. Whether or not that ends up being the case in Valhalla and how well the game uses its real estate remains to be seen.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is out later this year for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Stadia, with recent retailer leaks pegging the game for an October launch.

Creative director Ashraf Ismail recently promised that Ubisoft will be showing “a plethora” of gameplay footage from the upcoming RPG before its launch. We will likely be seeing a good chunk in Ubisoft’s July E3-style showcase.
