Some of the new characters in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 were designed for you to hate them at first
I admit some of the new characters in Mass Effect 2 really caught me off-guard, because they initially treated the player with enormous suspicion coupled with respect. Mass Effect 2 had a mish-mash of interesting characters, in where the player had to get to know them. For example, Jack the human biotic is very aggressive towards the entire crew and Shepard, but over time, once you talk to her, she softens up and you get to know her past. And of course in Mass Effect 3 fans initially voiced their hostility towards James Vega, the new character voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr, because he represented the player that is new to the series.
