Baldur’s Gate 3 Co-op Conversations Explained

What happens when you unexpectedly start a conversation in co-op and aren't the host? Larian Studios explains, ahead of the RPG's release.

Along with Illithid Powers and the final file size before release, Baldur’s Gate 3 received some new details on co-op conversations. The current system sees the player starting a conversation as the host in solo or co-op.

Other players can then see the conversation play out and vote on the host’s choices (which the latter can ignore). It’s when you enter a conversation unexpectedly that things become interesting.

“‘What if I enter a conversation with a character who has the wrong proficiencies for the choices I’m dealt with?’ This depends on a few things. When a conversation is started unexpectedly, the character who initiated whatever led to the conversation will host the conversation. That character’s proficiencies will therefore be the ones used to decide the fate of the conversation.”

So if you suddenly run into someone out of nowhere, it’s your conversation and decisions to make. It makes sense, especially since co-op allows players to run off and do their own thing. In single-player, it’s possible to enter a conversation with one character and then back out to choose another. It won’t work for all conversations, though.

“Where there’s agency in life, there’s agency in Baldur’s Gate 3. When situations are more fateful, you’ve your wits – and your proficiencies – to untangle them.” You can also make some dialogues private to prevent teammates from listening in. Larian also confirmed that Origin characters not controlled by players can romance each other, which makes things feel even more organic throughout the story.

Baldur’s Gate 3 launches on August 3rd for PC and September 6th for PS5.
