"Player choice and female playable characters are here to stay."

Battlefield 5

Following controversy over the reveal of DICE’s Battlefield 5 (which is ironic considering the negative reception to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4), DICE community manager Oskar Gabrielson took to Twitter to address the same.

Gabrielson noted that “player choice and female characters” are here to stay. He also said the developer wants the game to “represent all those who were a part of the greatest drama in human history”. It also wants players to have more choice for customizing their characters.

It was also noted that the game’s sandbox has “always been about playing the way you want” (fitting three players on a horse in Battlefield 1 with flamethrowers was provided as an example). “With BFV you also get the chance to play as who you want. This is #everyonesbattlefied,” said Gabrielson.

Though complaints have arisen over the inclusion of women as playable characters, some players have also noted the unrealistic depiction of the overall conflict. A British ranger armed with a katana fleeing British tanks, German paratroopers utilizing an American formation and so on were provided as examples.

Regardless, at this stage, all of this represents the kind of customization one could expect from multiplayer. We’ll still have to wait and see how the War Stories in the campaign pan out. Battlefield 5 will be showcased in greater detail at EA Play on June 9th and releases on October 19th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
